Blogging, Social Media, and Real Life
I've been on the Internet since the beginning, well, since the beginning of the World Wide Web. The Internet is older than the WWW; check out this history article. I've been blogging for about 9 years. In that time, I've had an uncountable number of blogs—each one a learning experience. My latest and most serious blog is backlinked at the bottom of this article. It's truly a labor of love! I've been through a series of very hard times in the last three years and my current blog is my "salvation"—the thing that keeps me from sliding back into deep depression and irrational behavior. Since the content of the blog is about rising above the mostly horrible state of the world and since I want to help others as much as I can, I've been learning more than ever about how to increase the number of people who visit. I've tried many recommended methods of increasing traffic and I've settled on a core group of techniques that are steadily bringing more people to the blog (see the attached image for my current methods {click the image twice for a larger view). I've avoided most of the search engine optimization methods for two reasons: many of the A-list bloggers don't use them and they take a tremendous amount of time. I've tried and rejected participation in various social media activities. Most of them aren't all that "social"—maybe someday but not quite yet... Also, I've completely given up on the micro-blogging applications—might be fun but they really don't bring people to the blog. I should add a huge qualifier here: my blog is written for a rather small niche—people who are serious about what's wrong with the world and willing to deeply consider solutions—but it still could have visitor numbers in the thousands per day, if I persist in and evolve the techniques that work. Many of the methods I've discarded are just fine for blogs that are seeking to sell information or gadgets; my blog is really not mainstream but that doesn't mean it's not important or can't attract a large number of dedicated readers. Not being mainstream mainly means I have to use methods that place a high premium on the humanity and feelings of my visitors. I have to deeply consider the truly social aspects of blogging, not the "social" media that gets people together in an online party... Maybe what I'm doing should be called "Meta-Social-Optimization"; at least it's a groovy title, eh? The most important recent endeavor is the formation of a consultant group—a psychotherapist blogger, a philosophic blogger, and a home-schooling mommy blogger—we're all working to devise meta-methods that increase the attractiveness of our blogs—the pulling power of the common feelings and thoughts that make us all truly human. I feel this approach will work for most bloggers since most bloggers are remarkably talented people who have an intense desire to share their lives, share their struggles and triumphs, and share their unique contribution to our human family. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ {click the thumbnail image then click the resulting image for a readable version} |
